December 24, 2018, East Orange, NJ: The East Orange Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs is hosting a Kwanzaa Celebration December 26, 2018-January 1, 2019 in partnership with four other East Orange-based agencies at various locations throughout the city. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
The “Kwanzaa Circle” consists of the City of East Orange’s Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, the East Orange Public Library, the East Orange YMCA, Elmwood Presbyterian Church, and Section of Orange National Council for Negro Women.
“We are excited to end and begin the year by honoring the seven principles of Kwanzaa – Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith,” said Rene Muhammad, Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs.
Throughout the week, special guest speakers will host and officiate the lighting of the Nguzo Saba (seven candles) at events planned throughout the city.
“Kwanzaa is an important cultural holiday for African Americans, and this year, the city wants to celebrate our culture, community and families by acknowledging our great past, while we look forward to an even brighter future,” said Stanley Edwards, Program Developer at the Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs.
