East Orange Partners with United Way and EOGH to Offer FREE Tax Preparation to Qualifying Residents

East Orange, Jan. 11, 2019: The City of East Orange, in partnership with United Way of Essex and West Hudson, East Orange General Hospital and the IRS’ Volunteers in Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will be offering free tax preparation services from January 21, 2019 to April 15, 2019 to East Orange residents.

The official ribbon cutting of the tax preparation site will take place on January 17, 2019 at 3pm on the 1st Floor of East Orange General Hospital located at 300 Central Avenue.

Qualifying families and individuals with an annual gross household income of $54,000 or less will be able to have both federal and state returns electronically filed free of cost. Returns are prepared by IRS certified volunteers, saving taxpayers an average of $200 per return. The free tax preparation program has seen tremendous success in previous years, servicing 336 taxpayers with returns totaling $556,008 for East Orange residents.

“Our goal for this free and convenient program is to put a maximum refund in the hands of hard- working families in East Orange,” said Mayor Ted R. Green. “Refunds that are brought into the community, not only benefits our families, but keeps our economy robust and revolving.”

The site of the free tax preparation program will be on the 1st floor at East Orange General Hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm-7pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. No appointments are required.

Residents should come prepared with the following items:

  • Current Photo ID
  • Social Security Card
  • (for Self and Dependents)
  • All income documents
  • W2, 1099s, etc
  • Account information for direct deposit
