[ARCHIVED] East Orange Offers Monthly First-Time Homebuyers Workshops

East Orange, March 8, 2019: To increase homeownership and help provide financial assistance to eligible first-time homebuyers, the City of East Orange’s Department of Policy, Planning and Development is hosting a series of free First-Time Homebuyer Workshops through the end of 2019.

Participating applicants may be eligible to receive up to $25,000 for down payment or closing cost assistance.

Funded under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the HOMEBuyers Purchase Program currently provides assistance in the form of deferred payment loan to homebuyers and low-interest or subsidy grants to developers.

Prospective homebuyers must meet the following five requirements to be eligible for HOME funds:

  • Be a first-time homebuyer (meaning not having owned a home in the last three years
  • Be a qualified low-income or very low-income household
  • Be the owner of the property after purchase
  • Occupy the property as their principal residence after purchase
  • Attend HUD-certified housing counseling certificate classes offered locally, and be committed to post-purchase counseling

“Purchasing a first home is a major financial commitment, and for many, the fulfillment of a lifelong dream,” said Mayor Ted R. Green. “Through these workshops, we want to connect our aspiring homeowners with experienced professionals and the financial resources that will ease the transition to homeownership and help build a foundation for sustainable wealth.”

Workshops will be held on the following dates: March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 31, August 28, September 25, October 30, November 27 and December 18. Each workshop will be held at 6pm in City Council Chambers, 44 City Hall Plaza, East Orange, NJ.
