East Orange, NJ, March 16, 2020: In compliance with the State of New Jersey mandate to reduce the chance of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading rapidly in schools and local communities, the East Orange School District will close for all students and staff effective Tuesday, March 17 - Tuesday, March 31.

During this time, students will participate in virtual learning instruction via Google classrooms. Explicit directions can be found posted on the District website at All classrooms will be monitored daily by the teacher. If a student does not have internet access at home, the parent is able to call Comcast at 1-800-391-3000 to set up free internet services for the time school is closed. We will also provide all parents with the phone numbers for 1 or more staff in each of the schools to contact for any specific questions related to their child’s school.

Additionally, to ensure that our students benefit from the same nutrition provided by the district under regular circumstances, we have set up five (5) school sites for students to pick up a “Grab and Go” breakfast and lunch between the hours of 8:00 AM-10:00 AM. The sites are as follows:

Edward Bowser Elementary, 180 Lincoln Street

East Orange Campus High School, 344 Prospect Street

Mildred Barry Garvin Elementary, 1 Grove Place

Whitney Houston Elementary, 215 Dodd Street

Langston Hughes Elementary, 160 Rhode Island Avenue

We continue to monitor alerts from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) about the possibility of the spread of Coronavirus within the United States. We are also in daily contact with the East Orange Department of Health. As of today, no positive reports of COVID 19 have been identified within the City of East Orange.

According to the CDC, person to person contact is thought to be the main method of transmission for the Novel Coronavirus.

As the health and safety of our schools is a collective effort from all members of our community, we thank you for your cooperation in ensuring this remains a top priority. #shareandrepost
