[ARCHIVED] EAST ORANGE SCHOOL DISTRICT CLOSES FROM MARCH 17-MARCH 31

East Orange, NJ, March 16, 2020: In compliance with the State of New Jersey mandate to reduce the chance of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading rapidly in schools and local communities, the East Orange School District will close for all students and staff effective Tuesday, March 17 - Tuesday, March 31.

During this time, students will participate in virtual learning instruction via Google classrooms. Explicit directions can be found posted on the school district’s website at www.eastorange.k12.nj.us. All classrooms will be monitored daily by the teacher. If a student does not have Internet access at home, the parent or guardian can call Comcast at 1-800-391-3000 to set up free Internet service for the time school is closed. Parents will also be provided with the phone numbers for one (1) or more staff in each of the schools to contact for any specific questions related to their child.

Additionally, to ensure that students benefit from the same nutrition provided by the district under regular circumstances, five (5) school locations have been designated to serve as “Grab and Go” breakfast and lunch sites between the hours of 8AM-10AM. The sites are as follows:

  • Edward Bowser Elementary, 180 Lincoln Street
  • East Orange Campus High School, 344 Prospect Street
  • Mildred Barry Garvin Elementary, 1 Grove Place
  • Whitney Houston Elementary, 215 Dodd Street
  • Langston Hughes Elementary, 160 Rhode Island Avenue

School and city officials continue to monitor alerts from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) about the possibility of the spread of Coronavirus within the United States. According to the CDC, person to person contact is thought to be the main method of transmission for the Novel Coronavirus and precautionary measures such as frequent handwashing for 20 seconds and regular disinfecting of homes and offices are highly encouraged.
