[ARCHIVED] Historical Society to Adopt Local History Room at EOPL

East Orange, NJ, December 9, 2016: The Historical Society of East Orange will officially adopt a room in the East Orange Public Library that currently houses collections of books and documents on the history of East Orange and Essex County.” A ceremony to mark the occasion will be held on Tues., Dec. 13, 2016 at 1pm at the Main Library at 21 South Arlington Avenue in East Orange.

Access to the library’s current collection of East Orange-related materials is already available, but with the assistance of volunteers from the Historical Society, the collection will be much easier to navigate. For example, older, more delicate documents such as newspaper clippings and letters will be transferred to archival paper and then scanned into an online searchable database. HSEO volunteers will also help to categorize the collection into sub-groupings such as the East Orange Golf Course, East Orange Public Schools and Municipal Government.

“Our East Orange Public Library is a wonderful resource in our community that continues to evolve to meet the growing demands of the community,” said Mayor Lester E. Taylor III. “We are excited to partner with members of the Historical Society to ensure that preservation of the city’s rich and diverse history is available for all those who seek it.”
