June 25, 2020, East Orange, NJ: Mayor Ted R. Green, the East Orange City Council and the Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be hosting the City of East Orange’s 3rd LGBTIQA+ Flag Raising to commemorate Pride Month in June. Mayor Green held the city’s first LGBT Flag Raising during his inaugural year as mayor.
The event will be held virtually on Friday, June 26 at 5pm and can be viewed live on Facebook and Instagram@EOCityHall.
The honorees include East Orange’s Project Nest Transitional Housing Program, a flagship program in New Jersey that addresses the growing need for supportive services specific to the HIV-positive gay/bisexual community and Tremayne West and James Bryant, residents of the RAIN (Reaching Adolescents In Need) Foundation, a shelter located in East Orange which provides housing for Essex County LGBT youth.
Featured speakers will be Gary Paul Wright, Executive Director of the African American Office for Gay Concerns and Christian Fuscarino, Executive Director of Garden State Equality.
“The recent social unrest and injustice spreading throughout the nation is a dark reminder that we’ve got a long way to go toward changing how people accept and love one another. My administration is committed to encouraging inclusiveness in the City of East Orange and this flag raising is our opportunity to raise awareness and recognize the important work happening in our community,” said Mayor Green. “This year, it was important for me to honor our young people because I believe that this next generation will be the first one to wholly embrace the LGBT community and make this world a better and safer place for everyone who lives in it.”
