July 27, 2020, East Orange, NJ: Mayor Ted R. Green, the East Orange City Council and the Department of Policy, Planning and Development are excited to announce the East Orange Farmers Market is now open virtually. Powered by The Cooperative Market, residents can shop fresh produce, grains, baked goods and a variety of organic products from local farms and gardens online at eoshopslocal.com.
The East Orange Virtual Farmers Market operates Thursday through Monday from 8am to 5:30pm. Residents can place orders during that period until Monday at 5:30pm. Orders will be prepared for pick-up the following Saturday between 9am and Noon at 23 Winans Street.
The Cooperative Farmers Market, which operates the online portal, is coordinated by the Newark-based Urban Agriculture Cooperative, whose mission is to localize and densify the food system while providing increased access to healthy food to urban communities.
The implementation of CDC-issued safety precautions and contact-less pick options allows the East Orange Virtual Farmers Market to offer an alternative shopping experience that keeps both sustainability and safety in mind for those looking for locally-sourced fresh produce and goods.
“Bringing our farmers market online allows us to continue to provide accessible, healthy and safe food options in our community, while also supporting our local farmers and vendors,” said Mayor Green.
As part of the city’s effort to promote urban agriculture and community gardening, the virtual farmers market also serves as a gardening resource tool intended to add value to our expanding community of growers. The online resource guide includes introduction to gardening classes, technical assistance, horticulture training and opportunities to bring vitality to residential backyards.
The virtual farmers market accepts a variety of payments including a secure check-out option through the online portal, a pay later feature that allows residents to make a payment during pick-up, senior vouchers, and programs such as SNAP, EBT, and WiC.
