[ARCHIVED] Statement from Mayor Ted Green on the Death of Tyre Nichols

TyreNichols

First, I want to express my deepest condolences to the family of Tyre Nichols. His death at the hands of five police officers is disturbing and barbaric. Described by Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis as “as bad, if not worse” than the Rodney King beating, this heinous incident is yet another heartbreaking reminder of every single man and woman who has been mercilessly beaten by individuals who were sworn to protect and serve.

This sadistic and egregious abuse of power is not a reflection of the good and decent men and women who live up to their oath each day. Rather, it is a demonstration of just how far we have to go to build mutual respect, trust and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement. And our reality – America’s reality – is that it will happen over and over again until we deal with the root causes of a system that has been broken for too long.

The video of the incident will be released later today and no doubt will be traumatizing and triggering for many. I encourage everyone to remain peaceful, respectful and focused on challenging and changing the culture in our communities.

Our prayers remain with the Nichols family and the entire Memphis community during this difficult time.
