[ARCHIVED] East Orange Recognizes Autism Awareness Month with the Expansion of Autistic Programming

AutismWalk

April 1, 2017, East Orange, NJ: The City of East Orange is proud to partner again with local non-profit Nassan’s Place to observe National Autism Awareness Month in April with the 4th Annual Nassan’s 5K Walk for Autism on Sat, April 22 and the introduction of a new Autistic Friendly After School Program, April 17-June 21.

Under the administration of Mayor Lester E. Taylor III, the Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs has worked closely with Nassan’s Place and its Founder Nadine Wright-Arbubakrr to provide and expand quality programming and services for East Orange-area children and families affected by Autism.

“Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. and New Jersey has the highest incidence of Autism with 1 in 45 children diagnosed,” said Mayor Taylor. “As a city, we strive for inclusion in all of our programming. Under the leadership of Director Osner Charles, his team and the dedicated members and volunteers of Nassan’s Place, East Orange is helping to fill a void among this historically under-served population by providing year-round educational and recreational programs, resources, and enrichment opportunities.”

The city's efforts were recognized in March when the New Jersey Park and Recreation Association honored the city with its  “Excellence in Programming” Award for its Autism Water Safety Program, which is one of the first of its kind run by a municipality in the state.
