December 27, 2017, East Orange, NJ: The Swearing-In Ceremony of The Honorable Ted R. Green and the East Orange City Council Re-Organization Meeting will be held January 1, 2018 at 12 pm at Cicely Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts.
Mayor-Elect Green will serve as the city’s 14th mayor.
Shuttle service will be running continuously starting at 11:15am at the Health Department, 143 New Street, and 44 City Hall Plaza. **Sign language interpretation also will be provided by DoDreamm Media.** All are welcome to attend.
Joining Mayor-Elect Green in taking the oath of office will be newly-elected members of the East Orange City Council: Bergson Leneus, the city’s first Haitian American councilperson, who will replace the Third Ward seat held by Mayor-Elect Green for the past 12 years; two-term First Ward Councilman Christopher James; two-term Second Ward Councilman Romal Bullock; two-term Fourth Ward Councilwoman Tyshammie Cooper; and fourth-term Fifth Ward Councilwoman Alicia Holman.
About The Honorable Ted R. Green
A longtime East Orange resident, Mayor-Elect Green has been active in East Orange political and civic affairs for nearly three decades, first as a member of the Third Ward Democratic Municipal County Committee and his wards’ block associations and civic groups, and later as Third Ward Councilman in 2006, a position he has held for three consecutive terms.
A former aide to New Jersey State Senator Richard J. Codey, Mayor-Elect Green is a 1982 graduate of East Orange High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from Cheyney University, a master’s degree in sociology and human services from Lincoln University and certification as a housing counselor from Rutgers University.
Over the past two decades, he has worked in the fields of property maintenance and housing revitalization, serving as Assistant Compliance Officer for the City of East Orange, Assistant Director of Code Enforcement for the Township of Irvington, Compliance Specialist at Brick City Development Corporation, and most recently, Irvington Township’s Director of Housing and Building Construction.
In 1990, Mayor-Elect Green founded Green’s School of Martial Arts to provide instruction in the discipline of martial arts, as well as offer enrichment, mentoring and cultural programs for students. During his tenure on the City Council, Mayor-Elect Green has spearheaded several key pieces of legislation and programs, including:
- Ordinance 41:2015 prohibiting the sale, offer or possession of any toy gun or imitation firearm which looks real to a minor or adult within the City of East Orange.
- The City’s Moratorium Act to provide tax abatement assistance to East Orange residents and to aid in preventing foreclosure.
- A resolution in support of President Barack Obama’s gun control and mental health initiative.
- Expungement programs for ex-offenders to incorporate them back into the community in an effort to make them assets in the community.
- Free lawn care and snow removal service for East Orange senior citizens.
The Annual Back-to-School Fathers Walk to encourage parental involvement and engagement among fathers of the East Orange School District.
Mayor-Elect Green has received numerous citations for his exemplary commitment and dedication to community service, including the NAACP of the Oranges and Maplewood President’s Award, the Community Services Award from the Todd Warner Foundation, the American Karate Academy Community Service Award, the HANDS, Incorporated Award for Community Leadership and Service, the Golconda Temple #24 Community Service Award, the M.A.U.I.I. Community Service Award and the New Jersey Governor’s State Public Service Recognition Award, to name a few.
He and his wife, June, are proud parents of two sons, Eric and Salahudyin, and four grandchildren.
