MONTCLAIR, NJ, January 2, 2018: The frigid weather has made a local women’s organization change their “Travel Rite” Program this winter for the East Orange Campus Basketball Team. The Montclair Chapter of Drifters, Inc. will distribute hats to the East Orange Campus H.S. Basketball Team, instead of the shirts and ties they generally do. The hats will be presented to the players just prior to the home game on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.
WHEN: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2018
TIME: 6:45 P.M./GAMETIME IS 7:00 P.M.
WHERE: CENTER COURT, EO CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL, 344 Prospect Street, East Orange, NJ
WHO: MAYOR TED R. GREEN and MEMBERS OF MONTCLAIR DRIFTERS
The “Travel Rite” Program by the Drifters was developed following the death of a former educator, Annie Moore, who created a similar program for East Orange Campus basketball players whereby she purchased shirts and ties for them to wear to every away game. Mrs. Moore started the program to ensure the basketball players looked professional when attending away games – she wanted to make sure they represented their city and their school well. Two years ago following Mrs. Moore’s passing, the Montclair Drifters picked up on the program, renamed it and distributed 50 ties and more than 30 shirts to the varsity, junior varsity and freshman basketball teams.
This year, the Drifters were asked by Coach Joe Jordan to give hats instead of shirts and to deliver them now so that the young men, many of whom don’t wear hats, would wear them, particularly given the frigid weather.
Tracy Munford, President of the Montclair Chapter said, “We are happy to work with Campus High School with our Travel Rite Program and through other programs as well. We encourage the players and all students to apply for our scholarships, too.”
The Montclair Drifters provide scholarship and small grants to community organizations throughout Essex County and to parts of Union and Passaic County, as well. Last year, the Drifters donated nearly $35K in scholarships and grants and they conducted a number of community-based programs as well, primarily for women, girls, children and families.
