EAST ORANGE, NJ, January 16, 2018: On Thursday, January 18, 2018, Mayor Ted R. Green will stand in solidarity with Mayor Ras Baraka (Newark), Mayor Tony Vauss (Irvington) and Mayor Dwayne Warren (Orange) to denounce discriminatory U.S. immigration policies and hateful rhetoric targeting people of color.
The four mayors represent eastern Essex County whose towns are made up of majority African American, Caribbean and Hispanic populations.

“Every time the Trump Administration reverses an immigration policy that has allowed hard-working families to find sanctuary, peace and a better quality of life, our nation is taking a huge step away from our humanity and what makes America great,” said Mayor Ted R. Green. “I don’t even want to repeat the words that were allegedly said last week by President Donald Trump about the native lands of my brothers and sisters from Haiti, El Salvador and Africa. We cannot give him that power. What we can and must do is stand together united as one. Our collective demand for respect won’t come easy, but we must be persistent, consistent and undeterred.”
As East Orange City Council Chairman, Mayor Green has been a champion for the rights of immigrants under the Trump Administration. Since December 2016, he has voted for legislation that designates East Orange a sanctuary city; approved a proclamation supporting the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival; and condemned the decision to revoke the Temporary Protection Status for 58,000 Haitians living and working in the United States.
During Mayor Green’s last City Council meeting as Chairman on December 26, 2017, the East Orange City Council voted 9-0 to approve a resolution to sponsor legislation that would require President Trump to submit to a mental and physical evaluation to determine whether he is mental fit to perform his constitutional duties.
“Enough is enough. We are a nation of immigrants who helped to build this country The harsh reality is that some of us came willingly and some of us did not. We cannot forget our history nor allow the toxicity of the White House to destroy what we have worked so hard to build – a land where people of all races are welcome to live, work and pursue the American dream,” added Green.
