The City of East Orange Health Department Environmental Division is responsible for health sanitation inspections and health code compliance enforcements of: retail food establishments, restaurants, businesses, mobile food vendors, one-day special events, schools, pools, daycare centers, barbershops, beauty and hair braiding salons, boarding homes, nursing homes, healthcare facilities, and hospitals.
Investigations are also done for communicable diseases, public nuisance complaints, stagnant water, animal control regulations, and tobacco violations. The Environmental division is also responsible for to seasonal activities involving: pool inspections, rodent control projects, and rabies clinics.
Animal Census: All dogs and cats are required by state law to be licensed every year; the East Orange Health Department is conducting an animal census to keep in accordance with state law and to ensure that all dogs and cats have a rabies vaccination. License fees are on the attached application.
Rabies Clinic: The East Orange health department holds free periodic rabies clinics for East Orange residents with valid identification and licenses. For further information, please contact the office.
Animal Control: The East Orange Animal Control addresses complaints regarding injured animals, animals-at-large, owner surrenders, and stray animals. Traps are provided with a $40 deposit fee and set by the Animal Control Officer, which are only set outside of the home. The deposit fee is returned when the trap is returned. Any services performed by the Animal Control Officer inside the home incur extra service fees and is up to the discretion of the Animal Control Officer. All owner surrender fees are $35 per animal unless proof of fixed income is presented, and is up to the discretion of the Animal Control Officer. Food Manager’s Safety Training and Certification: Periodic Food Manager’s training and certification is given and required for Risk Level 3 food establishments, restaurants, and daycare centers in East Orange.
Tobacco Control: The East Orange health department conducts periodic task forces to enforce that tobacco is not sold to minors. According to the State of New Jersey, those under 19 years of age may not purchase tobacco.
