Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)

In 2016 our SFSP served over 100,00 free meals to children in Summer Schools, Day Camps, community non-profit organizations, and local parks. In all, we have a community collaborative with 42 entities that are committed to establishing summer food locations throughout the city.

This program, under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services, provides all children up to 18 years of age with free meals to help fill the nutrition gap of the nearly 100% of our children who are eligible to receive free or reduced meals during the school year. The menu and program operations are under the auspices of the State of New Jersey, Department of Agriculture, Division of Food & Nutrition.

How it Works

As a sponsor with SFSP, the City of East Orange receives a federal reimbursement to cover the administrative and operating costs of preparing and serving meals to the children. Increasing the number of nutritious meals served to low-income children during the summer months continues to be an important priority for the City of East Orange, the State of New Jersey and the USDA. The East Orange Summer Food Program is always seeking to add new sites and activities that will broaden community outreach and help draw children to our existing program.
